Yoruba for Kidz Online Youth Camps

Campers learn the Yoruba Language via an Online Video Webinar with live instructions through  role play, and  fun activities with our experienced language instructors and small group classes.  There is lots of room to interact with other learners, in no time, our campers  build the confidence to speak and interact with each other or even other native speakers!

This is a beginner’s class. Our Beginners Classes are classified into 2 groups.

Y1 Beginner Level 1

Campers are either absolute beginners, who have had no previous contact with the Yoruba Language or they are false beginners, who have already been exposed to the language in a passive way, in which they may understand some words but cannot respond.

Consider Beginners Level 1 class if your Camper   :

  • is 10 – 17 yrs old
  • cannot understand or speak Yoruba at all
  • knows some basic vocabularies, but cannot use them in sentences

Y2 Beginner Level 2

Campers understand basic phrases and instructions used in specific situations. He/she can interact in a very simple way and uses incomplete sentences, without real grammatical content.

 Consider Beginners Level 2 class if  your Camper  :

  • has attended 2 or more previous Yoruba for Kidz classes in the past or can do the following**:
    • can understand when spoken to in Yoruba but cannot respond or sustain communication
    • knows the Yoruba numbers from 1-10
    • can introduce themselves and ask other’s for their name
    • can do basic greeting  ( good morning, good afternoon ,etc)
    • Talk about hobbies ( I love to _____)
    • Ask some one what they want , or tell someone what they want ( I want to ____)
    • Can talk about their family ( Older sibling, younger sibling, mum, dad etc)

**Learners may not be perfect at these, but they should have some exposure to this.

Campers have an opportunity to meet  and practice freely with other campers and instructors. This is a fun way to get them to express themselves. NO JUDGMENT at the community square!

Camp Length : 8weeks ( 8 Classes )  [Note:  No classes the week Nov. 22-29]

Days and Time (once a week )  :

  • Y1 Beginner Level 1 Days & Time: Saturday,  1pm CST or Tuesday, 5pm CST
  • Y2 Beginner Level 2 Days & Time: Saturday,  10am CST or  Tuesday, 5pm CST

Duration: 45 Minutes

About the Instructors :

Oluwafunke Ogunya-Olaosebikan is currently a doctoral candidate and graduate instructor at the Department of English, Florida State University. She has taught at different levels of education, home and abroad. Her interest in the Yoruba Language and Culture gave her the opportunity to teach non-speaker of Yoruba language as a Fulbright Scholar at the Council on African Studies, Yale University. She lives in Florida with her husband and two kids.

 

Matthew Ajibade is an associate instructor of Yoruba at Indiana University Bloomington. He has done a considerable number of projects in Yoruba which include translating Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. A Ph.D fellow in Linguistics, Matthew is passionate about using his native Yoruba experience in teaching young and adult non-native speakers of the language.

 

 

Victor Temitope Alabi has taught Yoruba to undergraduate and graduate students for over five years as Associate Instructor at Indiana University.He is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Linguistics. He has published in journals like Yoruba Studies Review and Issues in Intercultural Communication and has presented research papers in conferences organized by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), the African Language Teachers Association (ALTA), the African Studies Association (ASA), among others on various linguistic and pedagogical situations in Yoruba discourse. He lives in Indiana with his wife and daughter.

 

Tiwalade Ajeigbe’s love for children and passion to promote African culture and language inspired her to write children’s books and create fun children resources to inspire the love of the Yoruba language. She is the founder of Yoruba for Kidz. She has BS in chemical engineering and an MBA and also runs fun immersion camps that teach Yoruba to children on weekends. She lives in Texas with her husband and three children.
